Dates announced for next season’s S8 matches

The weekends for the next season’s S8 matches have been announced. Below you can find what weekends the teams are set to play their league rivals, however please note that no exact dates and times have been set yet, and these dates can still change pending on hall bookings and agreements between the teams.

As you can see, our men’s and women’s S8 teams are going to play together most of the season!

Agi voted Female Coach of the Season

We would like to congratulate Agi for being awarded Female Coach of the season, recognising her efforts in coaching both men’s teams and the junior section of the club for the last few years. This year has been particularly successful with the first men’s team which yet again gained qualification to the European Challenge Cup after finishing 3rd in the domestic league.

Zsolt Majoros voted Male Player of the season 2016

We would like to congratulate our player Zsolt Majoros, who has been voted Male Player of the Season 2015/2016 by the fellow Super 8 Clubs.

A few words about him:

Zsolt is our longest standing member who is currently still playing in our first team:He arrived over 5 years ago and immediately made a big impact with his impressive shots, but only over the least few years has he developed into the lead player he was for us this season. Having played European Challenge Cup with us 2 years ago gave him the motivation to be even more committed to the team, in hopes of achieving qualification again. He has guided the team to success with his tactical insights and great will to win, and many opponents have learned to fear his back-court canons enough to man mark him for most of our matches this season. Much to Zsolt’s despair this left him standing at the half-court line for much of the match, watching the rest of the team exploit the bigger gaps. However, he more than made up for his extra “rest” by going the extra step in defence and scoring those vital goals in the last phase of the matches when the strength of the others was draining. Despite his limited time in attack, he still managed to score 53 goals for the team during the season and played a vital role in securing the 3rd place for the team which again allows us to participate in the Challenge Cup…

We can only say, well done, thanks and let’s make the next season just as successful!

This award also means we retain the Player of the season for the second season running now! Keep it up!

Women’s team gains promotion to S8 league!!

This Saturday saw the last official match for the season, and our ladies finished it off in style by gaining promotion to the Super8 league for next season!

Womens Team Photo 3

After coming first in our South East Regional Development League, we had the right to play for promotion to the top flight where in principle we had to take on top teams from the other 3 RDLs. However, as no other team came forward with the ambitions to go to the higher league, the promotion was decided by a play-off with Deva HC – last placed in the women’s S8 in this season. The match took place on neutral ground at Loughborough University, a “no-tacky” venue. Deva didn’t seem to have gotten the message, as the ball and their hands were very sticky, but this didn’t deter our team from success. We travelled with a good squad of 10 players to this match and started off highly motivated, knowing that we would need a solid performance to gain promotion.

The opening minutes were a close contest, with goals spread evenly on both sides. While Deva defended very openly in a 3-3 defence, we were playing in a 6-0 formation, giving little space for shooters. Initially, our back players struggled to find openings due to the close marking which made fluent play more difficult, but soon movement from the players without the ball helped to open up large gaps that led to scoring opportunities. The Cambridge girls managed to gain a small advantage and went into the half-time break with a 2 goal lead.

Coming back equally motivated in the 2nd half, Cambridge was now facing a more defensive Deva, with a defender man-marking Grete and the remainder defending a 5-0 against the remaining 5 attackers. Fast movement of the ball resulted in good shooting opportunities and we managed to pull ahead further, aided by great saves form our goalie Pippa. With 6 minutes to go, we were up by 6 goals, which normally should constitute a save win, but with the Champions League final freshly in our memories, we didn’t want to start slacking and allow the other team back in the game. Unfortunately, at this point we conceded a number of 2 minute suspensions – firstly for a substitution error and subsequently for mistimed tackles on the field, reducing our team to 5 players for most of the last 5 minutes. Despite this, our team kept its cool and played smartly in attack to keep the gap comfortable and we ran out 19-15 winners.

And with this, our team is promoted!!!

And with this, our successful season comes to an end. Apart from our ladies who gained promotion, we are very proud of our junior girls team, too, who took to the field for their first competitive matches and are going to enter the U18 league next season. Our men’s teams also did us proud with the 1st team coming 3rd in the S8 league and qualifying for the Challenge Cup once again, and our second team playing a strong season in the London RDL against a range of good opponents. Thanks to all the members who made this season awesome, we are looking forward to the next one! As you see we will be busy, so new players are welcome at any level for all teams, junior and senior, male and female to help our club grow even stronger!

Now we are heading into our well deserved off season (with 2 trainings continuing until school breaks up for summer, and only one training running throughout the holidays), with some BBQs, beach handball tournaments and of course our AGM. And from next season onwards, we are going to have another Satellite club in Trumpington, in the newly opening Trumpington Community College were we will also hold our new 3rd training of the week! So more fun things to come 🙂
