Recap

The Cambridge Second team looked to follow their club-mates’ win with a result of their own. They faced an Islington team who had so far enjoyed a good season, winning all three of their matches. The teams led off with an even start, both exchanging goals, but soon Cambridge’s focus began to wane, allowing Islington to exploit a sloppy defence, who soon pulled into a four goal lead. Cambridge, despite having capitalised on large gaps in the Islington wings, were lucky to go into half time only four down – largely thanks to another great performance from goalkeeper Graham Jack.

Cambridge, who looked unnecessarily rushed and panicked throughout the first half, looked much more composed in the second, with half-backs Mikkel Birch and Fernando Hernandez both utilising gaps in the Islington defence to keep the score respectable, Ultimately, however, Cambridge’s lack of concentration in defence continued to be exposed, and found themselves seven-goals behind with ten-minutes to play. Switching to a labour-intensive but disruptive man-to-man defence disoriented the Islington team briefly, but was not enough to curtail the lead, with Islington finishing with a 34-25 home win.

The Cambridge team will look to rekindle their winning start to the season, hoping to give a much better account of themselves against Newham Flames on January 10th .
