NO training this Thursday, 1.10 due to unavailability of sportshall

Just a quick reminder to everybody that there will be  NO TRAINING this Thursday, 1.10.2015 as the sportshall is used by the school and therefore not available to us. There will be normal trainings on Wednesday, both junior and adult sessions and we are back to the normal schedule next week. Meanwhile, the 2nd men’s and women’s team are going to have their first match of the season this weekend, on  Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm in London, sporthouse respectively!

The season has started!

The season has officially started, if not for Cambridge yet. Our first match was meant to be against Leeds but has been postponed as Leeds could not secure a hall to host us. This means that our Super8 season throw off is postponed until the 25th of October against Olympia HC, but meanwhile the other teams played their first matches this weekend. Warrington Wolves beat NEM Hawks, though by a smaller margin than expected, while London GD showed no mercy against Manchester HC, scoring more than 20 goals more than their opponents. Meanwhile, Olympia HC started the season with a win over London rivals Ruislip Eagles HC. All this results speak of an interesting season to come and we can’t wait to be part of the action!

The men’s regional development league in London kicked off, too, with matches being played in both groups. In group A London GD’s 2nd team beat Carshalton HC by a small margin, while in group B (our group!) the newly formed London Angels HC beat Newham Flames HC.

Our 2nd men’s team will join the action next Saturday against Newham Flames while our women’s team will face London GD II ladies on Sunday.

Fixtures, results and league standings can be found here on our website! Have a look around.

Wednesday trainings are restarting

Finally school is starting again so we are picking up our Wednesday training sessions again! This means we have junior sessions from 6-7pm and adult development sessions from 7-8pm. New and returning players are welcome to both sessions, let’s make it a good turn out on our first day back already! The season is around the corner and it’s time to play some more handball!

Entering women’s team for coming season!

We are excited to announce that we will be entering a women’s team into the regional development league this season! While we do not know fixtures yet, it looks like we will be in a league with several London teams and should have a good 10-12 matches throughout the season. Any female players (16 years and above) with or without previous experience, please get in touch.

Beach handball in Poole

This weekend sees the British Beach Handball Championships in Poole returning! For the 3rd time in a row, Cambridge is going to be represented in the tournament again. We are sending our girls team, the “Cambridge Honeybadgers” and our men’s “Cambridge Wolverines” to battle it out in the sand! The girls will start off against the defending champions London Angels on Saturday morning, followed by the boys taking on Brunel. You can find more info and the full schedule on the Facebook page of the BBHC.

Good luck Honeybadgers and Wolverines!

Thursday trainings are back!

After our short break of 2 weeks, the Thursday training sessions are back! As usual 8-10pm at Chesterton. During the summer while the development training is taking a break, anyone 16 years and older is welcome to join this session. Let’s get ready for the new season!

Changes to training over the summer

Alejandro wins Best Male Player of the Season award!

Cambridge Handball Club is delighted that at the yearly EHA club conference, Alejandro Garcia Costa was announced as best male player of the season 2014/2015!

To earn this honour, at the end of the season each club was asked to nominate 3 players that will be put to vote to the other Super8 clubs to select the best player of the season. Cambridge nominated Alejandro, Toby and Cedric. Each club in turn had 3 votes to cast for best player of the season, with the top choice receiving 10 points, the second 6 points and the third 3 points. Of course voting for the own club was not permitted.

Alejandro was voted the best by the rival Super8 clubs which comes as no surprise since he has played an outstanding season. Scoring 103 in the league despite often playing on the right back instead of his usual line position, he has likely top-scored the season (no statistics are available from other teams, but at the halfway point of the season, he was leading the scoreboard). In addition to that, he was our best scorer in the EHF Challenge Cup, netting 11 goals against Szekelyudvarhely who then went on to win the whole competition! But everyone who knows Alejandro is aware of the fact that his true passion is defence. Not to be outdone by anyone in the team, he earned the most yellow cards and 2 minute suspensions (8 and 12 respectively), but no red cards! He has been a tremendous help to the club also off court, supporting the development league team and players as well as the junior trainings. In addition to all of this, he was also part of the Cambridge University Handball team, which won the British University Handball Championships.

Congratulations and we wish you many more outstanding seasons to come!
