Wednesday trainings are restarting

Finally school is starting again so we are picking up our Wednesday training sessions again! This means we have junior sessions from 6-7pm and adult development sessions from 7-8pm. New and returning players are welcome to both sessions, let’s make it a good turn out on our first day back already! The season is around the corner and it’s time to play some more handball!

Entering women’s team for coming season!

We are excited to announce that we will be entering a women’s team into the regional development league this season! While we do not know fixtures yet, it looks like we will be in a league with several London teams and should have a good 10-12 matches throughout the season. Any female players (16 years and above) with or without previous experience, please get in touch.

Beach handball in Poole

This weekend sees the British Beach Handball Championships in Poole returning! For the 3rd time in a row, Cambridge is going to be represented in the tournament again. We are sending our girls team, the “Cambridge Honeybadgers” and our men’s “Cambridge Wolverines” to battle it out in the sand! The girls will start off against the defending champions London Angels on Saturday morning, followed by the boys taking on Brunel. You can find more info and the full schedule on the Facebook page of the BBHC.

Good luck Honeybadgers and Wolverines!

Thursday trainings are back!

Demo game in Parker’s Piece

The Cambridge Handball Club is going to have demo games in Paker’s Piece this weekend, during the “Big Weekend” event. We will be playing between 12-4pm on Sunday, 12.7.15 so feel free to come along and check us out if you are interested in handball!

Changes to training over the summer

Over the summer period, we will be reducing our training times. The Wednesday sessions are going to stop for a couple of month. The last training session before the break is on the 15.7.15, both junior and senior and trainings will recommence on Wednesday the 9.9.15 again.

Thursday training sessions are running throughout the summer, with the exception of a 2 week break end of July when the sportshall is being refurbished. The dates when the hall is unavailable are 23.7.15 and 30.7.15.

Alejandro wins Best Male Player of the Season award!

Cambridge Handball Club is delighted that at the yearly EHA club conference, Alejandro Garcia Costa was announced as best male player of the season 2014/2015!

To earn this honour, at the end of the season each club was asked to nominate 3 players that will be put to vote to the other Super8 clubs to select the best player of the season. Cambridge nominated Alejandro, Toby and Cedric. Each club in turn had 3 votes to cast for best player of the season, with the top choice receiving 10 points, the second 6 points and the third 3 points. Of course voting for the own club was not permitted.

Alejandro was voted the best by the rival Super8 clubs which comes as no surprise since he has played an outstanding season. Scoring 103 in the league despite often playing on the right back instead of his usual line position, he has likely top-scored the season (no statistics are available from other teams, but at the halfway point of the season, he was leading the scoreboard). In addition to that, he was our best scorer in the EHF Challenge Cup, netting 11 goals against Szekelyudvarhely who then went on to win the whole competition! But everyone who knows Alejandro is aware of the fact that his true passion is defence. Not to be outdone by anyone in the team, he earned the most yellow cards and 2 minute suspensions (8 and 12 respectively), but no red cards! He has been a tremendous help to the club also off court, supporting the development league team and players as well as the junior trainings. In addition to all of this, he was also part of the Cambridge University Handball team, which won the British University Handball Championships.

Congratulations and we wish you many more outstanding seasons to come!

Congratulations to Székelyudvarhely for winning the Challenge Cup

You will all remember our opponent in the first round of the Challenge Cup this year, Szekelyudvarhely from Romania who kindly hosted us and provided our club with an unforgettable experience. We could tell they were a strong team when we met them, but this weekend they proved it by WINNING the Challenge Cup! Congratulations from Cambridge to worthy winners, well done! You can find more info on the matches on the EHF website or their club webpage.

Even though our season didn’t go quite as well as theirs, our matches were a great experience for our players and are a bit motivation to the team to try hard again for European Qualification. And really, if we look at the final result, we only lost against the winner of the Challenge Cup, so technically that nearly makes us 2nd 😉

Summer is here!

The season is over and summer is coming… That means lots of fun for our teams.

Overall we finished 2nd in the league with our 2nd team, with only Cranfield above us in the table and 7th with the 1st team in the Super8. We are hoping to build on this next year to do even better, but for now it is summer time which means outdoor handball!

We will be playing on Sunday, the 12.7. in Parker’s Piece in Cambridge during the Big Weekend and we are starting at the British Beach Handball Championship in Poole in August. Apart from that we will be having BBQs and trainings to keep everyone happy, so lots to look forward to. We are also hoping to have a coaching course in Cambridge to teach more people how to teach handball, so if you are interested in any of these activities and haven’t received our emails about it, please get in touch!
