Cambridge Handball Club made their return to the Copper Box, home of 2012 Olympic handball this weekend, as they faced title-contending London GD. For many of the Cambridge team, this was their first time playing in the arena, and against this opposition, and trailed by two goals shortly into the match. Cambridge quickly stopped the rot, and thanks to some quick counter-attacking play from Jose “Pepe” Ballester and Florian Stroehl, Cambridge slowly began to develop a lead over the home team. Frustrated by the lack of space offered by the Cambridge defence in all positions, London GD struggled to maintain discipline, with four players receiving 2-minute suspensions. This allowed the 2014/2015 top-goalscorer Alejandro Garcia to further increase the Cambridge lead, who went into the half time break 17-11 up.

In an attempt to level the scores, London GD formed into a higher, attack-focussed 3-2-1 defence, which Cambridge struggled to exploit. The frustration seemed to get the better of Cambridge, who began to make unnecessary mistakes, and halfway into the second half found their lead reduced to just 3 goals. An outstanding performance by goalkeeper Graham Jack, inspired by his return to the venue he had first witnessed handball some 3 years earlier, kept the score in Cambridge’s favour throughout the game. A tense final ten minutes followed, and despite being man-marked, Zsolt Majoros led the scoring to see Cambridge to a 28-25 lead.

This was an important win for Cambridge, fielding many players from their development team, including Jean-Daniel Malcor and Kevin Guy, who both gave sound defensive performances. They will look to take positives into their next game, also at the Copper Box, on January 17th.
