British Beach Handball Championships 2017

The British Beach Handball Championships 2017 were a great success as usual! This season Cambridge entered 3 teams: 2x Cambridge Wolverines to compete in the male competition, and 1x Cambridge Honeybadgers to play in the women’s competition.

Arriving Friday night to play in some exhibition matches under the floodlight helped all teams to gain some experience in the sand before action started on the next day.

All teams had a great Saturday, going through to the Cup on the Sunday. Unfortunately Wolverines I lost their quarterfinal against a german team in the morning, which prevented an all Cambridge semifinal, but Wolverines II took revenge when they knocked out the Germans in the semifinal, reaching the final of the BBHC for the first time in the club’s history. The final showed great tricks on both sides, but in the end our dutch opponents where simply too strong and playing on a different level, so Cambridge Wolverines II finished in 2nd place. To top off this amazing achievement, to his delight Pierre was voted goalkeeper of the tournament.

The Honeybadgers made the club proud as well, guided by “cranfield Alejandro” who returned from injury to coach the ladies they went out in the semifinals against eventual winners London GD, while having defeated in the group stages London Angels who lost their final against London GD… Making the ladies morally also 2nd 😉

As usual, a great weekend with fun, sun and handball, bits of rain and lots of teambuilding. See you next year, Poole.
