Mixed results

The first matchday of 2015 ended with some mixed results. First up was the men’s 2nd team match, where Cambridge took on Ipswich in the East Regional Development League. Despite the good turnout of the Cambridge team with 11 players, the first half of the match was a tense affair as Cambridge could never open up a big lead. We went into the break with only a 2 goal margin, 13-11 but could build on that in the second half. Reducing the number of errors and increasing the shooting efficiency, the team pulled of a 29-20 win in the end, gaining the first few points of the season. Now we need to follow up on this positive result in the next match against Peterborough.

The Super8 match against Salford/Warrington Wolves was always going to be a difficult game for us, having lost our away match by 14 goals. However, Warrington was coming to Cambridge with a seemingly weakened squad, relying on several U18 players to fill out their squad. Unfortunately, the Cambridge side failed to take advantage of this and a disastrous first half saw us down by 9-21 by the break, despite some nice saves by the keepers Cedric and Fabian. After the 10 minute interval, a transformed Cambridge squad entered the field. While Salford’s was starting to show signs of fatigue, Cambridge cut out some of the easy mistakes and improved markedly on the defence, resulting in a 6-0, later 9-2 run and closing the gap to just 4 goals again. During the first part of the 2nd half it seemed like a comeback might actually be possible, but unfortunately the momentum didn’t hold and in the end Salford run out comfortable winners; final score 25-35.
